Question 1 / A book to give to my 10-year-old daughter

I'm looking for a book to give to my 10-year-old daughter! If you have any recommendations, I'd love to hear them.

A book for a 10-year-old, then. Fourth grade of elementary school. There are probably many books that don't fit neatly into "age-appropriate" categories. I'd like to introduce a few from our selection here.

  • 『The Adventure of Being Alive』(Naoki Ishikawa) Naoki Ishikawa summited the highest peaks on all seven continents by the age of 23. Starting with his solo travels around Japan in junior high school, he recounts his experiences traveling the world. I chose this because I thought it might be interesting to get a glimpse of the curiosity that drives someone to visit places most people never go. It’s filled with photos, and there are furigana for all the kanji on every page.

  • 『Friends Smell Like the Sea』(Naoko Kudo / Shin'ta Cho) I hear elementary school students are quite busy, so I thought a book that lets them just relax and daydream might be nice. A whale and a dolphin, reading books and going on trips. It's the simple, everyday life of friends. The poems, stories, and illustrations are all heartwarming. I hope that when she grows up, she'll look back and remember, "I remember a book that was just so relaxing."

  • 『We』 This is a book that serves as a catalog for an art program about thinking of relationships with others through photography. It features fourth-grade students from Saitama. It’s a project where they take photos of the family members they are usually with. It records the discussions they had with editors about how to approach their photography. The dialogue between the adults and the fourth graders is quite refreshing, and the photos they took are fascinating themselves. Since the book features children who are exactly 10 years old, perhaps you and your daughter could enjoy reading it together?

I hope this is helpful. I do hope there is a bookstore nearby that carries Japanese books. If you would like, we can ship to Ho Chi Minh City, so please send us an email. Thank you for your inquiry!
